Inspirational People
Having someone to look up to, who is struggling with the same things you are facing, or is at a position in life you would like to get to, is a great and often encouraging thing. However you must be careful not to fall into traps and chose the correct person for you, as to not loose motivation and grow self resentment. This can be especially hard as peoples online and media presence rarely reflect the whole picture. They tend to put the best foot forwards, staging pictures, photoshopping and embellishing attractive personality traits.
There’s actually an interesting Japanese proverb that reflects this idea, it says that everybody has three faces, “the first you show to the world, the second you show to your close friends and family and the third you never show to anyone, it is the truest reflection of who you are.”
So you must not put your inspirational person on an untouchable pedestal and be aware of the different faces they show. Find someone who talks about or tries to document the full picture of their journey both the good and the bad
In last issue of The Shalloe Galley Newsletter i used the example of the beloved Bob Ross who was full of fun and quirky quips while recording his painting shows. During recordings sometimes what he was going for didn’t go entirely to plan, but he didn’t give up, he communicated mistakes to the viewer, suggesting ways to style them out calling them “Happy accidents”. He was not without his down days but believed with the dark always followed the sun.
