When creating any artwork you build up and develop mark making with both conscious and sub-conscious decisions. This will be through dots, lines and textures. The marks made can be controlled, gestural or sketchy different styles work well to capture life, emotion or the abstract.
The uncontrolled or the gestural movement refers to automatic drawing in particular. The hand is left to move aimlessly across the canvas, the action can become a repetitive ritual to remove the logic and become transcendental as it accesses the subconscious.
